I remember seeing a feature on the news here in Australia about a system that had been fitted to commercial aircraft that would allow operators on the ground to ';Take control'; of the aircraft if the flight crew failed to respond to calls from the people who monitor air traffic.
It also mentioned that these aircraft could be landed by operators on the ground if the flight crew had 'passed out' or it had been hi-jacked.
Apparently, the controls on the aircraft could be rendered 'unusable' preventing a hi-jacker from flying the aircraft.
You only have to look at the flight of the 'predator' drone that has been operating in the skies over Afghanistan, armed with missiles and controlled by operators on the ground in the U.S.
A cruise missile can fly right to it's 'target' with the flight plan that has been programmed into it's onboard computer, from many hundreds of miles away, as happened in the beginning of the attack on Baghdad.
Yes, I believe that happened on 9/11 and they were 'possibly' controlled on that day by other aircraft in the area, and yet I don't believe that a terrorist group would have access to that sort of tecnology, unless the U.S. have taught them how too.

I believe you are right and had we invested about two weeks worth of Iraq war expenditures on airline defense capabilities, we would all be safer. Instead we are wasting money and lives warring in Iraq creating more terrorists and otherwise achieving the apposite of the hoped for goals.

If you are referring to the US government, that's another story. We've had remotely controlled airplanes for decades, and have refueling tankers that are 767's that could easily be fitted with remote controls for a few hundred million dollars (since no R%26amp;D need be done).
